Stewardess Rant: Is Testosterone Killing Brain Cells?

Flight-Attendant-Stories-LiWelcome to "Stewardess Rants & Raves" – a blogging vent sessions based on my bizarre life as a flight attendant. Read about how I deal with the general public in one of the most stressful situations – air travel. Please forgive me in advance for my sarcasm.

Today was a particularly feisty crowd, people full of ridiculous requests. I am not sure who these people are. All 3 geniuses in just one day. How’d I get this lucky?

#1. Man who is standing in our flight attendant galley, as we are trying to clean up and put things away, "You guys should have a gym back here so we can do yoga and stretch."

- What a great idea! I am sure all the bankrupt airlines will jump right on that.

#2. Man, who doesn’t look up as we take his drink order. Eyes narrowed on his tablet’s screen, "I’ll take a gin martini."

- Um, how ’bout a mini bottle and ice? Gin martini, does it look like a full service bar?

#3. Another oblivious man says… "How exactly do they train you on turbulence? Like on the airplane or do you study it in a book?"

- I’m just gonna walk away now.

Conclusion: Wow, what dumb protein powder are these men drinking today?

Disclosure: I want to let you in on a little piece of my life, and this is why I am starting this feature. I hope you enjoy my stories… with a grain of salt of course! My travel stories are in no way a reflection on my employer.

Sinus Pressure When Flying SOLVED {Giveaway}

Earplanes recommended by flight attendant

Hi. In case you are new here, or haven’t been paying much attention at all… my name is Karissa and I am a flight attendant. I fly mainly domestic routes and absolutely love my job. I love everything about traveling, airports, airplanes… except being sick on them. WORST THING EVER!!

Have you ever flown when you are sick?

Let me tell you a little story… about 5 years ago, despite my knowledge of the terrible affects of flying while being sick, I did it anyway… and then flew some more. On my last flight’s take off and landing I had the most painful sinus pressure that you wouldn’t believe.  I swear "my head was going to explode" – I couldn’t imagine a worst pain. Well, that was because my eardrum had burst. Earplanes-travel-sinus-ears

Weeks being deaf in one ear, unable to work and about a bottle of Vicodin later, my ear was healed. I was a lucky one.

From this experience I learned about Earplanes. These little earplugs relieve sinus pressure and discomfort when you fly. These little guys were recommended over and over to me by my flight crews after I told my story. So I bought some, tried them and loved them. They work wonders if you have slight discomfort or sinus pressure when flying. They equalizing the air pressure difference between the plane’s cabin atmosphere and the inner ear – and I recommend them to everyone. No seriously EVERYONE.

Passengers are always asking me about travel products I recommend and what to do about their kids ears on landing. EARPLANES. If I notice someone is sniffling and feeling sick, I tell them for their return flight home EARPLANES. Anyone that flies a lot EARPLANES!

Just to be clear, I don’t wear them for every flight, just if I am feeling pressure on the take-off (because it will be worse on decent) or if I am feeling like I might be getting sick. They are one time use earbuds (although I use them about 3x before I throw them out). They are easy to use and not horribly uncomfortable. I put them in about 30 minutes prior to landing, giving my ear enough time to adjust to the gradual pressure change.

I have them in my flight crew bag at all times. Right next to my Sea Bands that I have for motion sickness. I will never be without them again. They are one of my must have travel products.

Holy flippin’ TSA FAIL

My favorite thing to RANT about?

The TS flippin’ A and their minimal common sense. Argh!

Goodness Golly, I am not even at the airport today, but I am thoroughly annoyed at the incompetency of the TSA – the fine folk in the blue button up shirts… oh, and badges!

I have ranted about the Transportation Security Administration before. This is not a new aggravation of mine. And lucky me, because I am a flight attendant I get to deal with them even MORE than the average traveler. Lucky, lucky me.

Today I am not ranting about the fact the TSA leave nasty notes in luggage, TSA inappropriate touching, or even the fact they strip search old people (but apologized later, whoops!). No, not my rant today, maybe tomorrow.

This time, this article really peeved me:

Florida teen detained by TSA for design on her purse

TSA-Girl-Purse-with-Gun

Read the whole TSA article on Yahoo News

WTF TSA?

Do you really, really, really, honestly, honestly, honestly think that gun clutch purse is dangerous?

A FEDERAL OFFENSE for a faux-gun design?

I rely on the TSA to protect my and passengers lives on my flights daily?

Send HELP!

Holy Heck Batman.

Dumb.

Since I couldn’t fathom the dumbness of the TSA in Norfolk, Virginia alone, I decided to share this article with my (so kind-hearted it is amazing) husband. I told him I was so annoyed at the ever-so-frequent TSA articles about dumb-dumbs that I should start a new blog dedicated to just how idiotic the TSA can be.

I mean, sheesh, I would have A LOT of easy content for blog posts! It would be like they write my blog for me… I needed to figure out a web address… these were the first that came to mind:

www.TSAurDUMMIES.com

www.TSAStupidFiles.com

www.DumbandDumberandTSA.com

or even

www.TrustMeIWorkForTheTSA.com

Now, I don’t truly plan on opening the TSA Dummies blog (unless you all would follow it?!?!) ;) But no, I probably shouldn’t just in case I end up on the TSA NO-FLY list (which has doubled in the past year!) It also wouldn’t be very good if my Flight Attendant supervisor found out. Because, honestly I don’t want to be fired for anything less than what Steve Slater at JetBlue did.

So I will have to stick with just a rant (or two) every so often to get things off my chest. Is that okay with you?

PS – Did you know TSA made $400,000 in loose change in 2010?

Travel Tips 101: Secrets The Airline Wants You to Know

Airline-Comic-Chicken-Joke!

If you’re flying to visit friends and family this summer, you’re probably already dreading the lines, crowds and delays at the airport. Traveling during this time of year tends to be busier than usual, but there are ways to get around common annoyances. Read on for insider tips (from the airlines) and info that can make your travel experience much more enjoyable.

1. When it comes to flight delays, we often don’t know any more than you do.
Boarding a flight and then sitting on the tarmac for upward of an hour is frustrating for travelers, especially when the cause of the delay isn’t being explained. But chances are, the airline isn’t holding out on you—they don’t know much either. "Circumstances like air traffic control, weather and operational issues are, for the most part, beyond the individual carrier’s control," says Abby Lunardini, a spokeswoman for Virgin America. "Oftentimes in these situations the information that the pilot receives from air traffic control is incomplete or in flux, so the crew is very limited in what they can pass along to passengers." The lesson? We’re all in it together.

2. Most airport lines are optional.
Think air travel is synonymous with queuing up to check in, go through security and rebook canceled flights? Aside from security lines, most other queues can actually be avoided. Many airlines will let you check in online, eliminating the need to wait for assistance at the airport. And if your flight is canceled or delayed and you need to change your travel plans, forget about crowding around the employees at the gate. "There’s this sort of mob mentality that happens when angry customers stand in line together. They start sharing stories and get madder and madder until they explode in the face of someone who has nothing to do with any of their problems," says Brad Hawkins, a spokesman for Southwest Airlines. "The best tactic to get out of a bad situation is to step away. Get on the Internet or get on your phone to call the airline’s 800 number. All of those channels can help accommodate you—and you won’t have to stand around waiting."

3. Discounts are available for some airline fees.
Many carriers have recently added surcharges for everything from headsets to checked baggage to changing your flight. While these fees aren’t going away anytime soon, there are ways to shave a little bit off your bill. United Airlines will give passengers a $3 discount on checked bag fees (which start at $20) if they check in and pay for their luggage online. Virgin America offers fliers the option to buy refundable tickets, which will let you change or cancel your flight at no charge; Southwest Airlines doesn’t charge a change fee at all.

4. Want a good fare? You don’t necessarily have to book your ticket far in advance.
In the past, the general rule for getting the best price on plane tickets was that you had to book your flight at least two weeks in advance. It’s not so cut-and-dry anymore: If flights aren’t full, you may luck out and get a great fare right before the departure date. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines both offer a last-minute deal section on their websites; JetBlue Airways lists deeply discounted last-minute fares on their JetBlueCheeps Twitter page.

5. We can’t do anything about TSA or FAA regulations.
Hate those full-body scanners? Can’t stand to turn off your phone during takeoff? There’s nothing your airline can do about protocols like these. "Refusing to turn off a personal electronic device or delaying doing so is a violation of FAA rules, and the FAA makes all airlines and flight crews strictly accountable to enforce these rules," says Lunardini. "And with regard to liquids and what can be carried on, the airlines have little to no say over this, as these regulations are mandated nationally by the TSA."

6. To avoid a stressful airport experience, travel against the grain.
If your travel plans are flexible, you can avoid battling the crowds: Plan to fly when everyone else isn’t. "Saturday is our least-traveled day of the week," says Hawkins. "As for during the week, think of the traditional business day—early-morning and late-afternoon flights will generally be the busiest. If you have the flexibility to move around those boulders of supply and demand, you’re going to have more ease of travel."

7. Not enough people take advantage of frequent flier programs.
"Everyone traveling with a paid ticket can earn frequent-flier miles," says Valerie Waller, a spokeswoman for United Airlines. That means that your children are eligible to start working their way toward a free trip. "Enroll your kids to be sure that they’re earning miles as well. Double-check that the name on their plane ticket matches the name on the frequent-flier account exactly."

8. To avoid getting bumped, check in online.
Many airlines "oversell" their flights to balance out the fact that on most departures people will cancel or not show up at the last minute. Overselling ensures that each seat will be filled. But what happens when everyone shows up? If no one volunteers to give up their seat (often for a travel voucher), the airline will bump passengers to the next flight. "The easiest way to avoid an involuntary bump is to check in 24 hours in advance," says Hawkins. "Once you have a seat assignment and boarding pass, then you’re confirmed on that flight." So when you get an email that your flight is ready for check-in, be sure to take action.

Must Have Travel Products – Jet Bag

JetBag-Travel-Product

Jet-Bag-Wine-HolderWho doesn’t love Duty Free? Duty Free is a great place in the airport to browse and buy items, best of all you avoid paying taxes! I know we all like that! I especially love the Duty Free in other countries. They have the best deals on wine, purses, perfume and more! I have been known to come back from a trip with some dark chocolate bars and a bottle or two of local wine!

One risk you take when you buy Duty Free is breaking the wine bottle in your bag. Sometimes I won’t even buy Duty Free because I don’t want to take that chance. That bottle of wine doesn’t seem worth it, if I am going to run the risk of it breaking and staining my clothes and other souvenirs.

Well NOW there is a solution! It is the Jet Bag! The Jet Bag is amazing! It is a padded (think baby diaper), zip-sealed bag that can absorb spills if they do happen– up to 750 mL of liquid!!

Travel-with-the-JetBag-WineTraveling with wine is tricky – but the Jet Bag will help make sure your wine arrives safely! Your suitcase gets tossed, flipped, shoved, dropped and jostled during it’s journey from the ticket counter to the luggage belt. Not to mention the rocky ride that it might have inside the airplane compartment!

Wine-Travel-BagThe Jet Bag Will Protect Your Valuables in Flight! There is no way to avoid the rough ride for your luggage, so make sure to wrap up your wine in you clothes and other padded items and keep it in secure in the Jet Bag. Because if your wine does break during the journey, at least the Jet Bag will ensure your clothes and other valuable won’t be ruined!

A wine travel bag like the Jet Bag is an inexpensive and  lightweight solution to give you the ultimate protection for your breakable purchases. I highly recommend this inexpensive, lightweight, safeguard solution!

Travel with Luggage Spotter

Luggage-SpotterThe luggage spotter, a cushioned identity handle wrap.

Wow! Do I have a perfect and funny story for this review! So, get this,  the day before I received the luggage spotter in the mail… my bag was snatched off the plane by another passenger! No joke. We had the same bag!! I did have a name tag on it, but nothing else. I guess she didn’t notice it!Luggage-Spotter-Handle-Grip-Wraps

She was too far ahead of me on the plane to say anything, but I saw her grab it! I began to panic and shuffled off the plane as fast as the passengers in front of me would let me! Luckily I stopped her at the top of the jetway, and got my bag back!

She was so, so, so apologetic and embarrassed, even after I re-assured her it wasn’t a big deal! She felt so Luggage-Spotter[1]bad! Now image if it was just a day later when I had my Luggage Spotter on my suitcase! This should have never happened!

So basically the second I got the Luggage Spotter in the mail, I put it on my suitcase! This cushioned identity handle wrap fits perfectly on my top handle. The Leopard print now makes my boring black bag stand out! One thing I love about the Luggage Spotter is the inside has a spot to put your business card or fill out your personal information on the card provided. That way if your bag does go missing, you can get it back!

Overall, the Luggage Spotter is a good purchase for around $9 on Amazon. There are a lot of options to choose from (sports team logos, specialty designs, etc). Most importantly this colorful handle wrap attaches to your bags to identify and separate your luggage from look-a-likes!!

GoodtoBeYou.com Travel Items

Good-to-be-you-clutch-purseYa know what? Today was good to be me. Because today I received a fun travel package from GoodtoBeYou.com.

I am going to be purely honest, GoodtoBeYou.com is totally, totally  awesome. I love everything about it this fun online shop. They have all kinds of girly travel items that are unique and hard to find in a typical store!

sheemergency-survival-kitYou will love browsing this site for items such as the shemergency survival kit or the Pretty Peacock Embroidered Show Bag! This online boutique will wow you but won’t break the bank, many fab travel pieces are under 25.00!

I was lucky enough to review the AfterSoles Foldable Ballet Flats, Jet-Set Girl Travel Mist Good-To-Be-you-Review-GiftsSpray and the Peony & Cassis Soapy Sponge!

The AfterSoles Rollable flats are adorable in the shiny gold color with the bow in the front! They are comfortable because they don’t bunch up all around the top, like some foldable flats do (I find this very uncomfortable). Instead, the bunching is only in the back. These stylish flats are perfect for on-the-go travel! They roll up nicely, and fit compactly (no larger than a cell phone)! They are great shoes for relaxing your tired traveling toes!

Jet-Girl-MistSpraying the Jet-Set Girl Travel Mist is the first thing I did when I entered my hotel room. I was so excited about the main ingredients: Lavender and Bergamot that relieve fatigue, stress and anxiety, as well as help prevent colds & flu, travel sickness and insomnia! But I was a little bummed that after spraying a few squirts the scent wasn’t what I hoped for, the Lavender was pretty light, I mostly smelled lemon. While the scent wasn’t quite what I’d hoped for, I do think this bottle is handy when you want to freshen up all of those strange spaces you encounter when traveling (planes, hotels, etc.).Hostess-with-the-Mostess-Good-To-Be-You

Showering is simple with the Peony & Cassis Soapy Sponge. That’s because this sponge has shower gel infused in it! It is soft on your skin, yet exfoliates because it is a sponge! This item is named one of Oprah’s Favorite Things… and well, I couldn’t agree more with her, it is so neat!

DISCOUNT CODE!! YAY readers we’ve got a code for all of you that want to purchase any of the fun. Use the code “FRIENDS10” to receive a 10% discount at check out!

This $4.8 Million Airport is less than life-size

Almost 5 million dollars was spent on an airport that doesn’t even transport a single passenger?!? Huh!?!? That’s right! Knuffingen Airport cost 4.8 million dollars, took six years to build and yet doesn’t fly anyone!

World's-Larget-Model-Airport-GermanyThat because the Knuffingen Airport is the world’s largest model airport!

Knuffingen, is based on Hamburg’s airport, and just opened to the public at Miniatur Wunderland, in Germany. Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg, also has the world’s largest model railroad, and now Knuffingen Airport! Oh I want to visit so bad!! I guess I need to add Hamburg, Germany to my travel bucket list. :)

Knuffingen-AirportThe pictures and video of this airport amazing me, how cool would it be in real life? The airport features 40 aircrafts that take off, land and taxi, it has jetways that pull up to the planes and 90 different moving ground vehicles. The lighting goes in cycles from day to night. The aircrafts in the model have airline logos such as KLM, Air France, Emirates and, of course, Germany’s Lufthansa and AirBerlin. The aircrafts are a range of Boeing and Airbus types.

There are approximately 40,000 lights, 15,000 figurines, 500 cars, 10,000 trees, 50 trains, 1,000 wagons, 100 signals, 200 switches and 300 buildings. Luggage, carts, staircases and carparks are also featured in the display.

Passengers appear to walk around the terminals and the vehicles even feature flashing lights and indicators. Check out the video of the Knuffingen Airport:

Some day I hope to get to Germany and see this display!

Go with Travel Zoo for Cheap Travel!

I became a flight attendant for one basic reason – I wanted to TRAVEL THE WORLD! When I am not working on the plane, I am planning my next vacation to a exciting, new destination!
