How I Got My Dog To Stop Barking at the Neighbor

dog-barking-cartoon

We have these evil children living next to us.  I am not being harsh.  Truly, these children are evil. These little devils run around hitting each other (and their dog) with sticks and rocks. They scream, jump, punch and kick. They make me worried about the future generations.

My secret nickname for these neighbors is Sid. You know Sid, the mean neighbor kid in Toy Story. Remember that little disaster? These kids are equivalent.

Slinky Dog: "It’s Sid!"
Rex: "I thought he was at summer camp!"
Hamm: "They must have kicked him out early this year."
Rex: "Oh, no! Not Sid!"

sid-from-toy-story-image

Basically these kids come banging, yelling and throwing things at the fence which separates our houses. Then my dog goes crazy barking. I don’t blame her! My dog has good sense, and she doesn’t like these kids either.

She looks through the fence posts and watches them going bonkers. Then she barks.

And barks.

And barks.

Our dog, our sweet dog, will bark incessantly at these kids.

While I appreciate her sentiments (I feel the same way), it is very obnoxious to have them screaming and her barking. It’s a freaking zoo! She’s a dog, I cannot reason with her or explain to her, that I feel like barking too,but it is not polite or helping the situation.

stop-dog-barking-productSo after trying different ways to get her to stop barking, we found one that works for us and for her. It’s called Quit It™.

QUIT IT!™, uses pets’ natural instincts to quickly correct unwanted habits like barking, scratching, chewing, and jumping. It emits a "hiss" sound that triggers an “alarm” in pets, and helps to redirect behaviors. Using only safe and natural pressurized air, QUIT IT!™ is an useful tool that eliminates the need to yell at your pet. With one spray sound, your pet’s attention is immediately redirected.

This product is amazing! The "hiss sound" isn’t painful to an ear, but boy does it get her attention. It quickly corrects her bad behavior and she runs to find me!

Here is the thing, it is an "As Seen on TV" product, and I know how gimmicky those can be, but I swear to you…. it works for our dog! This helpful training aid is saving us from the annoyance of constant dog barking! Finally!

Purchase QUIT IT!™ for $16.99 for 2 bottles that lasts up to 300 Sounds each.

Calming Medicine for Dog Anxiety

psc pets dog calming medicine

Can I just breakdown to you? We have tried everything for our dog’s anxiety. We have tried the works on her. She is just plain terrified of the car, fireworks and loud noises! It wasn’t until talking with our friend who happens to work at the Humane Society, that we discovered a safe calming medicine works wonders.

We were over at her house for New Years, and she gave them to her dogs to relieve anxiety of a big group of people (New Years Party) and the fireworks that went off all night because of the celebration. I was able to see first hand how well they worked on her dogs, and couldn’t wait to see if it helped ours too. Because, if you are a pet owner like me, you know that nothing saddens you more inside than your upset pet!

Pets can be like children (mine is to me) and we just want the best for them!dog cat sleeping peacefully

We tried the PSCPets calming formula for dogs. This formula is safe for everyday use. It can relieve pet anxiety due to fireworks, loud noises, big groups of people, moving, visits to the vet, kenneling or other stressful events for dogs. This product is tasty (Daisy begged for them like treats)! There is liver and poultry flavors and they are just the right size for an easy chew. PSCPets Calming Formula for Dogs contains key ingredients which help to promote relaxation and balanced behavior. These ingredients include: Valerian Root, Ginger and Vitamin B1.

After using this product for a few car rides (long and short) we think that it helps reduce Daisy’s anxiety. I will say she is still anxious, but she isn’t as anxious as normal. She is a little more lethargic and doesn’t breathe as heavily. We will continue to use this calming medication for our dog, and hope to see her anxiety levels continue to drop.

Caring for an Ill Pet

care for sick dog pet

There are many illnesses and ailments that can set your pet back. Anything from a minor injury to a considerably more serious disease can lead to a range of symptoms in your pet. Because you know your cat or dog best, it is you that will usually recognize the first signs of trouble. If you think your animal is sick then you should consider consulting a vet, but some illnesses may require a change in food or feeding habits, extra or less exercise, and other changes in your pet owning lifestyle.

As dogs age, their bodies begin to struggle. As with people, an older dog will find it more difficult to get the exercise that they need and in turn, can lead to other physical ailments. It can prove impossible to make a dog walk long distances or run if they have a condition like arthritis but consider the amount and type of exercise your dog is getting and whether it is suitable for them.

Look at the type of food you are providing. Some pet breeds are more prone to stomach upsets and digestive diseases than others. If your dog or cat suffers from an upset stomach, then gradually change them to a more sensitive food, like Applaws or Lily’s Kitchen. These are high quality foods that contain natural ingredients and do not contain ingredients that are potentially harmful for your pet.

Look at how often you feed your pets. Many owners like to have set meal times and feed their dog two or three times a day but certain breeds, especially those prone to blot, may not suit this feeding arrangement. They may be healthier with a small but steady supply of
food or with five or six smaller meals every day. This can prevent many upset stomachs.

If your dog is ill, sensitive to certain foods, or needs to lose weight then foods like Hills Prescription Diet foods ensure that they still get everything that they require at meal times and nothing that they don’t need. Choose food carefully because it is important that you get the right food for your pet.

Dog Fun Playing in the Snow with PetSmart {Giveaway}

PetSmart Toys for Pets

As I tried to take a picture of the Luv-A-Pet™ Hot Pink Caterpillar Dog Toy, my dog Daisy grabs it out of my hands and dashes for the dog door. BOOM, within 3 seconds she is outside rumbling with it in the snow. So much for getting a picture of it before it is all soggy and slobbery…

Immediately, I went to the window to view my dog running laps with the pink and purple caterpillar flailing around in her tight grip. She would stop briefly to re-adjust, whip it around and then get back to running. She continued… run–head shake–run–head shake. As I watched from above, I was enamored with her joy, just as much as she was with her new toy. =)

I put my boots on and braved the cold to get some fun pictures of her playing:

Homemade Dog Treats for the Holidays

Pupolicious Dog Cookies Homemade

Last night was a Christmas Cookie Extravaganza! But this wasn’t a typical Christmas cookie event, this time it was for the dogs! That’s right, instead of the normal Cathedral Windows Cookies, Sugar Cookies and Snickerdoodles – we were baking up some Pupolicious Original Cookies.

We had all of our gifts ready and set for our friends and family, but we had forgotten one family members’ friends! Our dog Daisy was getting a few things in her stocking – but what about her little dog friends too? Why not give them a little something this Christmas! While dog toys and store bought treats are great, we decided to do something extra special and made some dog treats at home!

It was a family affair in the kitchen – Daisy helping with all the scraps that we dropped of course! What a fun night we had of mixing, blending, rolling, baking and decorating! After everything was dry we bagged them up and put little Christmas gift tags on them for her pup friends! Here is our dog treat making night:

pupolicious-ingredients-dogThe ingredients include moisture, protein, fat, and fiber. (Whole wheat flour, brewers yeast, non-fat dry milk, corn starch and guar gum.) There is no added sugar, no preservatives – just safe, wholesome ingredients.

dog-treats-reciperolling-pin-dough

Mix the treat ingredients together with a little vegetable oil and lukewarm water. it gets pretty tough – kind of like any dough (pizza, bread). Then roll it out and cut it into treat shapes with your favorite cookie cutter. This Holiday Package from Pupolicious came with a cute tree cookie cutter – so I used that one!cookie-cutter-christmas-trecookies-trees-christmas-bakThe cookie cutter tree was a perfect size for dog treats during Christmas time. After cutting them all out, I placed them on a baking sheet to toast in the oven for 30-35 minutes. They turned out crispy – just like a dog treat from the store!

christmas-cookie-decorating

After the dog treats had cooled, I decorated them with the provided icing mix. All I needed was to add water. The icing dried to the dog treats overnight and then we packaged them up in baggies with gift tags, to give out to all of our dog’s doggie friends. (I know cheesy, but cute, right?)

Pupolicious Dog Treats

Pupolicious dog treats are a fun activity that is rewarding too! The treats are safe for dogs and humans alike! We actually did taste them, and they just taste like a wheat-y cracker. Still, I think my pup enjoys them more than we do. :) While this recipe does have wheat in it, they are also coming up with a wheat-free version for the pups who are allergic or sensitive to wheat! Be on the lookout for that!

Pupolicious dog treat mixes for make at home dog treats can be bought online at the Pupolicious.com store or at Amazon.com – what a fun gift for the dog lover!

How To Reduce Stress & Anxiety in Dogs

Thunder Jacket Dog AnxietyDaisy is our fur-baby. She is treated just like a one of the family. She gets regular grooming, eats healthy food and even sleeps in our bed. Being our fur-baby, we worry about her when she isn’t acting herself or when she is sick. It sadness us to see her upset, so we try to comfort her in everyway that we can.

But when it comes to fireworks and storms (thunder and lighting) it seems like we are helpless to her. Although fireworks are only a few times a year (New Years and Fourth of July), we live in Colorado, and get a lot of storms. Sometimes every night for weeks there are storms. These storms consist of heavy rain and loud lighting. The thunder and lightening gets so close to our house – that a summer ago a tree in our neighborhood was hit and started on fire!

I can’t blame Daisy for being scared of these noises, sometimes they scare me too! The problem is, my husband and I feel so useless during these times. No matter what we do we can’t calm her nerves.

Then one day I heard talk about an anxiety-relieving dog jacket available for dogs. It was a product that had high ratings of success, seemed simple and was all natural. I read that it worked for stressful situations like storms and car rides. I couldn’t wait to try it out.

We received the dog thunder jacket from Paw Posse. It came in a very lively box with a lot of information on it. Inside there was a pamphlet on how to introduce the shirt to the dog, with tips and instructions on how to put it on (good thing because it looks a bit confusing at first). In reality it was easy to use. Thunder-Shirt-for-dogsThundershirt-for-dogs-reduc

The Thunder Jacket For Dogs is safe, effective, drug-free, and great for relieving anxiety and fear…

Used for: fear of thunder, separation anxiety, barking problems, general training tool, any noise anxiety, crate anxiety, car and travel anxiety, any excitability, reactivity, general fearfulness, leash pulling and more.

Symptoms: panting, barking, shaking, drooling, whining, hiding, scratching, licking, seizures and more.

We tested the patent-pending ThunderShirt on Daisy. To get her used to the shirt we left it on the floor for a few days and periodically placed dog treats on it. This made her associate treats/getting feed/positive with the jacket. Then we put it on her for 10-45 minutes a few days in a row. After about a week she was accustom to it and didn’t fight when we put it on her.

The jacket, which applies gentle pressure to a Daisy’s torso works in a similar way to a baby being swaddled. It cuddles the dog, and is described as a "hug" for dogs. The jacket seemed to calm Daisy after a few minutes of wearing it. She has worn it in the car a couple times and appears to pant and shake less. She still has nervousness and anxiety in the car, but we have seen a change. I have confidence that over time she will get better and better.

We have tested the jacket in the car, but have yet to experience a storm (usually only in the summer). And in a few weeks the fireworks will begin, so sure enough we will pull out the Thunder Jacket and help our dog get through the loud noises. My husband and I are thrilled that there is finally something to help our dog with anxiety, and we no longer feel completely helpless!

If your dog is anxious or fearful like mine is, I suggest checking out the Thunder Jacket For Dogs from Paw Posse. It can be purchased for $39.95 – $44.95 online and it ships out fast!

Evanger’s Dog Foods and Pet Calendar Contest

evangers-dog-food-meatWe are a bit crazy about our dog. She is absolutely a part of our family, and we treat her like so. She is lucky enough to be an indoor/outdoor dog, she gets unlimited amounts of high-quality food, and we reward her for good behavior daily with delicious treats.

We are very consciences of the food and treats we give her, we don’t just give her garbage. We don’t eat the fast food, fatty and sugary stuff… so we aren’t giving it to our pet either! One brand I recommend for farm-fresh ingredients and high quality grain-free food and treats is Evanger’s Dog & Cat Food Company.

ABOUT EVANGER’S

Evanger’s Dog & Cat Food Company is a family-owned and operated pet food cannery in the United States.  The company is dedicated to improving the health, length, and quality of life of pets through wholesome, hand-packed nutrition. They offer human-grade ingredients sourced in the United States (90% local to the plant itself). They can and package a variety of wet and dry formulas that are grain-free and low-grain, specialty formulas for puppies and seniors, as well as exotic meats such as pheasant and rabbit.

daisy evangers dog treatsMY OPINION EVANGER’S

I couldn’t be happier than when I see "Made in the USA" on my dog’s treats and food. It is nearly impossible to find in today’s market. Especially with all the big brand companies out there. Supporting smaller companies like Evanger’s is crucial in my opinion. And more than just  "Made in the USA" – my dog loves the stuff!

Daisy couldn’t quit licking her doggie lips after taste testing the buffalo and chicken canned wet food. And the jerky treats had her doing tricks for hours! She loved the flavors and could smell them from across the room – literally, she’d come running, bolting for a single treat!
