National Geographic has been a well recognized source of non-fiction information for decades. I remember looking through pictures and reading about animals from my parent’s own stash of magazines at a very early age.
Once I became a 2nd grade teacher, I really got to see how much kids love reading about true facts! They really are like little sponges, with a lot of questions about how the world works, and the creatures living among us. Books are the perfect way to learn about these things. In our school district, we actually do an entire non-fiction unit for 2nd grade and we spend a lot of time focusing on research. Although there is a lot of great literature out there, I REALLY wish I would have had a National Geographic Almanac in my classroom to feed their curiosity. This would have been perfect for their projects with the abundance of information, facts, and over 500 photographs in full color to keep their attention! (and yours too- bet you’ll learn a few fun facts!)
The newest 2012 edition is perfect for leisure reading as well. Straight from National Geographic are some of the features included:
· Your World 2012—What’s hot and what’s ahead for 2012
· Going Green—Eco-lingo and tips for green living
· Amazing Animals— From alligator to zorse (half zebra, half horse) and everything in between, tons of fascinating facts about where animals live and what they do
· Culture Connection—Food, currency, literature and lots more from around the world
· Super Science—Space, future world and cool inventions
· The Little Big Book of Fun—Supersized section of puzzles, games and silly trivia
· Wonders of Nature—Turbulent earth and weather, water, oceans, rocks and minerals
· Awesome Adventures—Exciting places to explore around the world
· History Happens—Kids’ favorite perennial topics of ancient Egypt and China, life in the past, United States presidents and international conflicts
· Geography Rocks—Maps, travel, famous landmarks and more
You can even watch a video on their site to learn more about it!
Your child will love this almanac whether or not they can read on their own yet. It’s the perfect opportunity to sit down in the evening before bed, and read a few pages together. I love reading material that’s not only fun, but educational. I can’t wait until I can look through this with my son in a couple of years (he’s only 8 months now…so he’s only interested in gnawing on the pages, ha!).
A definite must have for your own family bookshelf!
