Disclosure: In this post about Yoga Poses for digestion, I am wearing Soybu yoga clothing that I received free.
For those looking to calm a upset stomach or relieve pains of chronic digestive issues, here are some yoga poses I have gathered that do just that! These yoga poses are some of the poses that can alleviate pain, bloating, cramping, indigestion, or other bowel issues. They are great for people with minor digestive ailments to those who are living with Crohn’s, IBD, IBS, or even celiac disease.
Since being diagnosed with IBS, I have found natural solutions to dealing with my IBS symptoms. Some of my symptoms that I deal with are nausea, bloating, gas, constipation, cramping and overall abdominal pain. I refuse to be on medication my whole life, and I am always on the search for natural remedies for IBS. Yoga helps many people with digestion issues, so yoga is one of my newest remedies! (Along with yoga, I also have changed my diet and take probiotics, various vitamins and natural supplements.)
Whether you are like me and suffer from serious digestive issues, or if you just have some tummy trouble now-and-again, here are great yoga poses for irritable bowel disorder or any other digestive issues.
Yoga Poses for IBS and Digestion
Marichyasana (Simple Sitting Twist) – This starting pose improves circulation by allowing the blood to flow through the digestive tract and gets things moving.
Vajrasana (Rock Pose) – In this pose, your heels press on the nerve in the center of your buttocks which is said to have an effect on the digestive system.
Uttana Shishosana (Extended Puppy Pose) – This digestive pose is especially useful for stretching the belly to relieve cramps or indigestion.
Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose Supported) – This yoga bridge pose is a great backbend to stretch the abdominal muscles. It aligns the digestive organs in an optimal way to allow for better digestion and flow. To better your digestion, try pressing one hip up at a time and then switch.
Dhanurasana (Bow Pose) – This yoga pose opens the abdomen and lengthens the torso. It stretches and lengthens to aid the digestive system and relieve constipation.
Trikonasana (Open Triangle Twist) – Stretches and twists your belly. The twisting motion tones and energizes the abdominal organs, especially the intestinal tract and liver.
Malasana (Garland Pose) – This yoga squat pose helps with constipation. The body is designed to squat during elimination and this squatting pose causes the puborectail muscle to compress the narrow opening of the rectum.
Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend Hug) – This poses is great for calming the nervous system (which is linked to your gut). It works with the adrenals in the kidney to compress abdominal muscles and aid in digestion.
Ustrasana (Camel Pose) – This yoga stretch creates space in your torso which improves many conditions including digestion. It is great for menstrual discomfort, constipation, cramps and bloating.
Ananda Balasana (Happy Baby Pose) – Stretches the hips and the inner groin, lengthens the spine and calms the mind to relieve stress, in turn stimulating digestion.
