Everyone that flies for travel has to go through the security checkpoint. The TSA (ugh!) are required to do random checks on bags, shoes and people. Even if there isn’t a problem. These checks are unavoidable, there is nothing you can do about them! In fact, even when I am in uniform and rushing to a plane I have had them (very, very infrequent, but still, like wtf?!)
Sometimes the extra screening is unavoidable and sometimes it is not. Let’s try to avoid it if we can!! I am here to tell you my tips from what I have seen when this EXTRA screening COULD have been avoided.
If you want to avoid the purposeful extra TSA screening here are my Travel Tips from a Flight Attendant:
1. Don’t wear metal – Extra screenings are done if you beep in the metal detector twice so be prepared by wearing and carrying as little metal as possible!
Have your phone, coins, keys, heavy metal jewelry (wedding rings are fine), belt buckles, metal hair clips, etc. off of your person the first time through the detector! Any body piercings!?!
2. Don’t wear a belt – If you don’t need to wear a belt, then don’t. Hey, you’ll be more comfortable on the plane! Or if you must, simply pack your belt in your carry-on and put it on AFTER you go through security! Don’t run the risk of accidentally leaving it on… and automatically getting a pat-down.
3. Take off your shoes – I am sure you know this one by now, but if you forget and try to go through the detector, they have enough reason to check you.
4. Don’t be sketchy – Haha. No seriously, they are trained to look for odd behavior (ie: looking around a lot, nervousness, eye contact…) And whatever you do, don’t, don’t, DON’T tell any TSA/ Government Security jokes.
5. Obey the TSA Laws – I posted about this previously, and I will say it again. Liquids in a clear, zipper bag, no more than 3.4 oz. each. Laptop out of the case. Clearly packed carry-on. Extra clothing: jackets and hats off. No questions – just do it.
If the metal detector still goes off? Sometimes clothing will beep in the metal detector: Large metal buttons, snaps and heavy duty zippers, might go off. Very few (but some) underwire bras can set off the detector too. Be prepared, nobody wants the “new” TSA screening pat-down (it is soooo embarrassing and degrading!)
