Ugh. Is it winter season already? Not quite yet… but one thing I tend to always wait to late for is taking care of my car before the snow comes! I tend to miss that prime moment before the snow comes to prepare for driving in the winter conditions! But this year I am going to write this post so I will surely remember to do it early!
Here are some tips on how to stay safe in the snow and ice!
BE Proactive
– Get your car checked by your mechanic before the snow and ice! Check brakes, anti-freeze levels, wiper blades and tires. Put on snow tires if you need them (the studded tires work great!)
– If the snow is here never neglect wiping off all of the snow and ice from your windows, lights and mirrors before driving! (I would have a perfect driving record if I would have done this one cold morning! Big mistake!)
DON’T Run on Empty
– Keep your gas tank at least half full in the winter. The extra gas reduces condensation that might plug your fuel line with ice and stall your engine! It also makes your car that much heavier, which is safer in the snow!
SMOOTH Sailing (Driving)
– Don’t jerk your wheel or slam your brakes! Quick moves can send your car sliding out of control! Turn your wheel with smooth, precise movements. Also, PLEASE, PLEASE drive slowly and monitor your speed!
PREPARE for the Worst
– Before the snow falls, pack your car with a few blankets, first aid kit, flares, snacks and a flashlight! Also, in case you need to get out of a slippery spot – pack a bag of cat litter (for traction) or dig your self out by packing a mini shovel! Whether you live in the boondocks or the city – you never know when you’ll need them!
