My dog has tried a number of different dog foods in various flavors. We always strive to get her the best of the BEST dog food. She has tried buffalo, venison, beef and salmon. But duck? That was a new one! I was very interested to see if she would enjoy it!
Lucky us, we got to taste test the Halcyon Dog Food from The Honest Kitchen. It is their newest dog food selection. It is made for adult dogs – for all breeds and sizes. It is AAFCO complete and balanced for adult maintenance, made with dehydrated cage-free duck, rolled oats, vegetables, and fruits.
So how did she like it? I gave her a first taste and she slurped it right up!
While she is not a picky eater, she usually likes to try new things. She does tend to get bored with foods after eating them for awhile. I wonder if this would be the case. Seeing how fast it was gone, I assume not.
I think she enjoyed trying some of the new tastes that she is not used to. Currently we serve her grain-free food, so she is not used to the rolled oats, buckwheat and chia, which I am sure she enjoyed, but I don’t want to keep feeding her frequently, because in my opinion dogs shouldn’t have grains.
Although the food does have grains, I was happy to see that there was 24% protein and 13% fat in this dog food, which is a decent percentage of protein, and one of the first things I look at for when I look at dog food bags.
Also the ingredients were so impressive! First of all the food is made in the USA. Nothing is from China! The meat is free range (whether it be chicken, fish or duck). The fruits and vegetables are 100% non-GMO and the seeds and grains are 100% organic!
Duck is a unique protein, and I think it was a hit. Duck is also great for dogs that have problems digesting common proteins like chicken or beef. Since she gobbled up the test food I gave her so fast, I will be mixing the rest of it with her own food, since it is never a good idea to just jump right into switch dog foods. If she still enjoys it as much as the first nibbles, we will have to look into this dog food more.
One thing for sure, she was begging for more.
The Halcyon Duck Recipe fresh dog food is sold in 1 oz. ($1), 4lb (59.99), 10lb box ($119), and 10lb case ($469). It is human-grade, but not meant for human food. All you need is water and you have yourself a doggy dinner!
