Disclosure: I was provided coconut oil for this article about oil pulling.
Have you heard of oil pulling?
Oil pulling is a technique where you swish oil in your mouth and “pull” it between your teeth for approximately 20 minutes. This process is a natural and traditional way to detoxify your mouth and body as a whole.
There are many possible benefits to this old fashioned medical remedy. Some possible side effects include whitening of teeth, boosting immunity, better breath, solving sinus issues, alleviating headaches, improving gums, removing bacteria and more. Basically, oil pulling is like a really, really, good cleansing.
When considering the oil for oil pulling, it is important that it is food grade. Popular oils used are sesame oil, sunflower oil, olive oil, ghee and coconut oil. As far as I’ve read, coconut oil is the most effective at pulling out bacteria and removing plaque.
I most recently used this coconut oil for oil pulling:
I decided to use this coconut oil for my oil pulling because it is natural, organic, extra virgin and cold pressed. It has no added ingredients, it is 100% unrefined coconut oil. This is important to me, because since I am trying to take out toxins from oil pulling, I don’t want to use anything that isn’t completely pure!
Tips for oil pulling:
- Use 1 – 2 teaspoons of coconut oil (liquid form)
- Slowly swish, don’t aggressively swish like mouthwash.
- Swish while you are in the shower. (It seems to go faster, and less distracting)
- Spit the oil in a trash can, not in the drain.
- Do not swallow the oil – if it works it should be full of bacteria.
- Rinse your mouth with warm water, salt water, or mouthwash.
- Follow the process with a normal teeth brushing.
- Continue to oil pull every day for a week, increasing the oil up to 1 tablespoon, to see the best results.
I use coconut oil for oil pulling in addition to my regular oral hygiene of flossing, brushing and mouthwash. Find more about coconut oil I used for oil pulling on Amazon.com.
