SmarterTravel.com is out with a list of U.S. airports it ranks as least-stressful and most appealing to travelers. Scoring high are airports in Seattle, Providence and Austin, among others.
In their top 10 list, things that made certain airports stand out were hassle-free security, interesting time-killers, such as art galleries and salons, free wireless Internet, and that old airport standby, bars and restaurants, according to the website’s editors.
The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport won high marks for its fast-moving security lines and friendly TSA personnel. Brew pubs and coffee companies are well represented in every concourse.
Somewhat hard to imagine if you haven’t been there, the Palm Springs International Airport in California, actually has an outdoor courtyard with patio seating, a wine bar, a Starbucks, and play spaces for both kids and pets. Artwork by glass artist Dale Chihuly is another nice touch
At the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, there’s a 1.4-mile walking path located in Terminal One where travelers can stretch out kinks. Bonuses for families include three arcades, two play areas and a family center, stocked with a rocking chair, a crib and a family-friendly restroom
Both the Tucson International Airport in Arizona and the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas got high marks for their artsy vibe. Tucson’s airport is packed with artwork, while Austin’s features live music during the week.
On the east coast of the country, T.F. Green Airport in Providence, R.I. gets props for its low-key atmosphere and, with just 22 gates, the small airport is easy to move through. On the opposite end of the scale, Florida’s bustling Orlando International Airport is admired for its useful amenities, kid-friendly restaurants and shops, plus family-only security lines.
The quirky Branson Airport in Missouri was designed to evoke a rustic lodge, with exposed wood beams, a water wheel, a general store, and a barbecue restaurant. Among the unusually friendly airport services are greeters who welcome travelers when they enter the building, and employees who come out to the runway for the "Branson Wave" to say goodbye to a departing plane.
Rounding out the top 10 list is the tiny New Bern, N.C. Coastal Carolina Regional Airport, with just 10 daily flights, and Palm Beach International Airport in Florida, where travelers can play a round of golf at the main terminal’s indoor putting green before flying off.
