So, I’ve told you my identity theft story and shared with you about the number of ways the bad guys can get your identity via online or print. But we haven’t talk much about protection while you are away on a trip.
So what tips do I have for worry traveling?
5 Tips For Worry Free Travel
1. Turn on Account Notifications. Now-a-days banks and credit cards alow you to get notifications to your email and by SMS text. It is a great way to know what activity is happening while you are away.
2. Notify your credit card company of your travel itinerary. Your credit card company might put a hold on your account if they see it being used in an irregular place. That being said, you can tell them you only will be using it (here) for (this) amount of time. If it is used anywhere else, it will be flagged.
3. Download a helpful App. to your SmartPhone. I personally live by some of my apps. There are a ton out there that keep track of things. You can turn the lighting on and off in your home. You can shut your garage door remotely. You can set your alarm system. You can monitor your accounts all in one place. Search them out, there is bound to be some that will come in handy!
4. Ask for Help from a trusted Neighbor or Friend. I know we’ve heard all the stories about being too trusting, but go with your gut. Get the help of someone you can trust to check on your home every couple days. They should also get your mail so you mail carrier doesn’t see the mail piling up!
5. Leave a Light On. It is that simple. The statistics show that there are significantly less home robberies in homes that left a few lights on. It is worth the energy cost! Better yet, get a smart switch!

A personal story of identity theft while on vacation.
My husband’s co-worker (and our friends) planned an elaborate vacation to Italy. It was supposed to be 2 weeks of Italian bliss. They had been saving and planning for the trip for at least a year prior. Each detail was planned of their visits, hotel accommodations and transportation.
Then the most heart breaking thing happened to them. On just their second day in the country, they were mugged on the train. They took their money, credit cards and other items in their wallet. Luckily, they still had their passports. They were devastated. They were so stressed and overwhelmed by the events that they decided to cut their vacation short and go home. They were too exhausted to deal with the hassles of cancelling credit cards and reissuing of identifications.
So how can you avoid some of the hassle?
