I am honored to work with Influence Central and The Salvation Army for #RedKettleReason. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.
Sometimes I am so selfish. Sometimes I get so caught up in my own life that I forget about giving back to others. Sure we have our monthly contributions that we donate, but beyond the small percent of our salary that we give to charity, I want to do more.
There is so much I am able to do for others. I just need to get out and do it.
I think the first step is educating myself on the charities out there. I am excited to say I recently learned a lot more about The Salvation Army than I ever had.
Did you know they are one of the oldest providers of social services?
How the Salvation Army Kettle Began
I just finished reading a document about how the Salvation Army began. The charity’s start is very humble. Just a man trying to carry on the Salvation Army approach from England to the United States. In simple terms, he set out a cooking pot in front of the ferry boat to collect donations.
From that very first “Red Kettle” began a large growth of more throughout the nation. Still till this day you can find the Red Kettles along with a worker with a chiming bell who is in charge of the contribution.
The Kettle and I
Since hearing the story of The Salvation Army, I am more inclined to give when I see the Red Kettle outside of the storefronts during the holidays. I now know the importance and the history of the Red Kettle, and find it charming that it has lasted to this day.
My husband has a stack of $1 coins and I have decided to carry them in my car for when I am out shopping and see the Red Kettle. It helps me remembering that the holidays are about giving, whether big or small. It is the spirit of Christmas.
The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has been helping people for more than 130 years in the United States. They do the most good because of their employees and volunteers. In 2013, The Salvation Army’s 3,600 officers, 59,000 employees and 3.4 million volunteers served
nearly 30 million Americans in need!
The services that The Salvation Army provides are more than I knew! They serve and provide meals, rehab services, day care, shelters, disaster relief, medical services and more. They help the needy in so many ways, from children to senior citizens.
