Making your own almond milk isn’t as hard as it sounds. It only takes 2 ingredients (almonds and water) and if you choose a sweetener of your choice.
Almond milk, or any milk for that matter is great if you have a sensitivity to lactose. As for me, dairy has weird side effects on my body. For the most part, dairy and I don’t play friendly. So that is why I have been buying nut milks for the past few years. All the money I’ve spent on nut milks, and I had yet to try to make my own.
When I looked into making almond milk… I realize I had everything I needed, except a nut bag for almond milk. Once I got the nut bag from Amazon, I had everything else!
How to Make Organic Almond Milk
Ingredients
1 cup raw organic almonds
4 cups water
Optional: Sweetener (honey, sugar, agave syrup, vanilla, maple syrup)Equipment
Bowls or Jars
Measuring cup
Blender or food processor
EcoSak nut bagInstructions
- Soak almonds for at least 12 hours overnight or up to 2 days. Soak the almonds in water and 1/2 tsp. of sea salt in a bowl. Tip: The longer the almonds soak, the creamier the almond milk.
- Drain and rinse the almonds. After the almonds have sat and soaked, drain the almonds and rinse them thoroughly. The almonds should feel a squishy and plump.
- Combine almonds and water in a blender. Place the almonds and 2 cups of water in a blender. Blend on high for a few minutes, pulsing the almonds until a very fine meal is formed. Water should be white/clear.
- Strain the almonds. Strain the almonds with the Ecosak nut bag into a pitcher or jar. Tie the end of the nut bag and squeeze the bag to recover the most milk. Use your hands or a spoon – you should get about 2 cups of milk!
- Optional: Sweeten to taste. If you like the almond milk as-is, by all means! But if you like a little sweeter taste, add a tbsp of honey or tbsp of vanilla, or both!
- Refrigerate almond milk. Keep the almond milk cold in the regriderator for up to 2 days.
Tips: The remaining leftover almond meal can be added to recipes, oatmeal, smoothies, muffins and more.
