We Bought a Zoo is a wholesome family movie which is based on a true story. With only some slight variations in the story, the film was a hit in the box office and thanks to Redbox was a hit in our home. It really touches the hearts of families everywhere, including ours.
Benjamin Mee is the father this movie is based on. The movie tells the story of Mee and his family who just moved into a dilapidated zoo and took on the LAGRE challenge of preparing this zoo for a reopening to the public. When the film was being made, Mee approved the slight variations of the film (like the bear escaping was actually a jaguar escaping). The minimal changes in the movie didn’t take anything away from the lovely true life storyline or the ultimate take-away lessons.
We loved the movie because it was based on a memoir. Real stories always touch us that much more. Also, the characters, Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Elle Fanning are some of our favorites. While the acting was good, the story was better. The film gripped at out hearts for all the single parents, for the animals in today’s world and kids that are confused and broken. It is something that we could connect to and we felt deeply for the characters. We could relate in a small way, even though our family doesn’t own a zoo per say!
Overall, it is an uplifting film with a slightly funny, slightly dramatic take about grieving loss, loving family and starting over. We just loved watching the story play out and will for sure rent it from Redbox again!
